A story rooted in time

But it was in the 20th century that the estate took on an international dimension thanks to Alexis Lichine. Nicknamed “the Pope of Wine”, this tireless ambassador for Bordeaux’s great growths bought the estate in 1951 and gave it his name. He modernised, restructured and breathed new life into this Médoc jewel. Today, his passion continues to inspire every corner of the estate.

An exceptional terroir for exceptional wines

The richness of Château Prieuré-Lichine lies in its unique terroir, made up of Garonne gravel spread over five communes in the Margaux appellation. These complex, well-drained soils allow the purest expression of the Médoc’s noble grape varieties: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot…

Thanks to a mosaic of plots and a parcel-by-parcel approach to winemaking, each wine expresses the finesse, balance and depth that are the signature of great Margaux wines. Since 1999, under the impetus of the Ballande family, the estate has pursued its quest for precision and authenticity with passion and exacting standards.

Innovation at the service of tradition

In 2013, a decisive step towards modernity was taken with the creation of a new-generation vat room. Imagined as a link between past and future, it stands out for its tulip-shaped vats, designed for gentle gravity vinification that respects the fruit. This architectural gesture, designed by Sylvain Lagarde, reflects the estate’s ambition to combine cutting-edge technology with ancestral know-how.

And that’s not all. The vineyard’s management is part of a sustainable approach, with High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 certification obtained in 2019. A strong commitment, in the service of a respected wine and environment.
