Le Mascaret : the magic wave of the Gironde estuary

The tidal bore

Imagine a wave travelling up the river against the current, carried by the force of the rising tide… This is the tidal bore, a rare and breathtaking sight that you can watch from the banks of the Gironde estuary. During high tides, this wave can reach up to 2 metres in height, forming a veritable wall of water that rolls forward over several kilometres. Isn’t that amazing?

When the ocean meets the river

The tidal bore is the result of a powerful encounter between the Atlantic Ocean and the descending waters of the rivers. At every major tide – particularly when the coefficient exceeds 100 – the rising tide rushes into the estuary with such force that it creates a visible, sometimes spectacular wave. This rare phenomenon is more pronounced when the river’s flow is high and the weather conditions are favourable.

The result: an impressive wave speeding up the Gironde, offering spectators a moment of raw nature and shared emotion.

Surfing the tidal bore : for lovers of the slopes

What if you could surf a wave… on a river? It’s possible, thanks to the tidal bore! Every year, surfing enthusiasts set off on this mythical wave, trying to stay upright for as long as possible, sometimes for several kilometres.

Where can you watch the tidal bore in Gironde?

The tidal bore can be seen at several points along the Gironde estuary and its tributaries, notably the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. Among the most famous spots:

  • Saint-Pardon (Vayres), the star of the tidal bore, prized by surfers from all over the world.
  • Barsac, Libourne, and of course…
  • Macau, in the Médoc, the unmissable local spot to watch the tidal bore in action.

At Macau, the phenomenon is particularly visible in August and September, when water levels are low but the current remains powerful. A perfect time for an outing along the estuary, combined with a stroll or a gourmet break.

A spectacle to be admired… in complete safety

To enjoy the tidal bore to the full, we advise you to choose a high observation point, such as a raised bank or a fitted terrace. This allows you to enjoy the spectacle in complete tranquillity, away from any eddies or debris carried along by the wave. And don’t forget your binoculars or camera!

A wave not to be missed!
